About Us
We are a classical String Quartet based in Cornwall, UK, aiming to introduce audiences to new repertoire as well as established works. Our concerts have included quartets by Debussy, Samuel Barber, Shostakovich, Philip Glass, Vaughan Williams, Stravinsky, Haydn. Beethoven. Mozart, Boccherini, Schubert, Dvorak, Saint-Saens and Elgar. We’ve also premièred four string quartets by our ‘cellist Stephen Brown. In 2014 we gave the world première of Ivor Gurney’s Quartett in A (1919). With friends Patrick Gale ('cello), Laura Parfitt (viola) and Patrick Saunders (clarinet) as guest players we have also performed Brahms' Clarinet Quintet, Schubert's String Quintet, Schoenberg's sextet Verklärte Nacht, Brahms' B Flat Major sextet and Ethel Smyth’s Quintet Opus 1. We also gave the premiere of Pippa Drummond's Cornish inspired sextet Golyow Pennwydh which was specially specially written for us.We have also enjoyed working with mezzo-soprano Maria Heseltine and soprano Elinor Chapman on works by Butterworth, Warlock and Barber and other works written specially by Jeffrey Joseph and Stephen Brown.The Corineus String Quartet performs in Truro, St Ives Newquay and Falmouth and looks forward to continuing future collaboration with local soloists and guest players, as well as further promoting local composers. We finished our 2023 series with a concert at the church of King Charles the Martyr, Falmouth, on 30th September, where we were joined by our friend Elinor Chapman (soprano) for a world premiere of a new work by our cellist Stephen Brown (see clips of us playing).We’re just working up some more repertoire & deciding what to play for our 2024 concert season, so keep watching this space!
